Plattsburgh's Sam Bezio (10) comes after the puck as Saranac's Brody MaComner (4) breaks in on the net and gets knocked off the pu.ck before he gets there. It would be the second annual Aimee McLane Memorial Scholarship game from the American North Sports Center; The #14 Saranac Spartans would be hosting the Plattsburgh Hornets as the teams would battle for the conference lead at the season's midpoint. The game would remain scoreless after the period, but not because of the lack of effort on the ice, as the Spartans would outshot the Hornets 16-6. The Hornets would get the game's opening goal at the 9:34 mark of the period when Braden Calkins would snip it by Shawn McLane for the first goal and make it a 1-0 game. Then, in the period's closing minute, the Hornets would get the all-important two-goal lead as Braden Calkins would find the net again for the second time and take the 2-0 lead into the intermission. When the team returned for the third period, both teams would go after it again as the Spartans were hoping for the early goal in the period to help down the stretch. The Spartans would get on the board, but it would be late at the 15:28 mark when Landon Giroux would score on the scramble play to make it a 2-1 game. However, this night, Plattsburgh Hornets Owen Chapple was up to the task as he would make 44 of 45 saves on the night as they go to 6-6-2 and will be back into action Friday night against the Beekmantown Eagles. While Sean McLane would be good in his own right as he would make 18 saves as they fall to 8-5-1 on the season and will be back in action next Tuesday at Saranac Lake to take on the Sara Placid Lakers Gallery

Beekmantown's Pryce Parker (44) stuffs it in between the Bellow Free Academy goalie and the post to make it a 4-2 game. We would have nonconference hockey from the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse as the Beekmantown Eagles would take on out-of-state foe the Bellows Free Academy Bobwhites in Boy's Hockey action. Getting started would be a tight game as both teams would have their chances in the first period, but no one could get it in the back of the net for a score. The Bobwhites would get on the board first in the second period as they would score three goals in a span of 1:27 to take the 3-0 lead. The Eagles would get on the board with 2:41 left when Edward S would get them on the board and make it a 3-1 game after the second period. The third period would open up with the Bobwhites and regain their three-goal lead at 4-1 just 1:20 into the period. The Eagles would answer right back with a goal from Pryce Parker just 90 seconds later to make it a 4-2 game. From there, the Bobwhite's defense would be up to the task and hold on for the win. In the winning effort for the Bobwhites, Phoenix Wells would make 37 saves in the afternoon as they go to 4- 5- 1 on the season and head into their next game against Champlain Valley Union. As for the Beekmantown Eagles, Jake Bell would make 16 saves as they go to 8-5-1 on the season and head into their next game, February 5th, against Northeastern Clinton Cougars. Gallery

NYSPHSAA Boy's Hockey: #3 Ogdensburg Blue Devils @ #10 Saranac Spartans January 25th, 2025

Saranac's Gabe Moore (3) with the snip from the slot to tie the game at one in the first period. It would be a rare regular-season meeting between a pair of top-ten-ranked teams in the state as the #10 Saranac Spartans would host the #3 and undefeated Ogdensburg Blue Devils from the American North Sports Center. The visiting #3 Blue Devils would waste little time getting the game's opening goal at the 3:45 mark of the first period when Tegan Frederick would light the lamp for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans would come firing back and tie the game at 7:17 of the period when Gabe Moore would snip the wrister to tie the game at one, which would be the only scoring of the period. The game would stay there till the 9:03 mark of the second period when Nate Irvine would find the back of the net and give the Blue Devils the 2-1 lead, and that's how the second period would end. Then, in the third period, the Blue Devils would extend their lead to 3-1 on Nate Irvine's second goal at 2:30. The Spartans returned 90 seconds later and made it a one-goal game again on the Ryan Campbell goal and made it 3-2. Although the one-goal game would be short-lived as just over a minute later, the Blue Devils would make it a two-goal game again when Rocco Testani would score and make it 4-2. From there, the Blue Devils' defense would finish off the Spartans and add an empty netter late in the game from Laughlin O'Donnell as they secured the 5-2 victory. In the winning effort, the Blue Devils would stay perfect on the season at 13-0 as Ty Jacobs would make 26 saves on the afternoon, and they will be back in action Tuesday as they take on the St. Lawerence Larries. As for the Saranac Spartans, Shawn McLane would make 32 saves in a losing effort as they fall to 8-4-1 on the season and will take on the Plattsburgh Hornets Tuesday in the Aimee McLane Memorial game. SUNYAC Men's Basketball New Paltz Hawks @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 25th, 2025

Plattsburgh State's Ladan Graves (15) with the finger roll over the defender for the score. It would be a battle inside the top of the SUNYAC Men's Basketball as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the SUNYAC Conference, the New Paltz Hawks, from Memorial Hall in front of 325 fans. The game would be tight through the first half, but the Cardinals would have a slim 36-33 lead as they went back and forth through the first half. In the second half, the game would stay tight as both teams would trade the lead back and forth a few times, but the Cardinals would have the 47-45 half as they secured the 83-78 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals would go to 9-7 on the season as Kareem Welch would lead the way with 19 points. As for the New Paltz Hawks, they would fall to 11-6 in the season, and AJ Knight and Dakoda Smith would combine for 17 points each night. Gallery

SUNYAC Women's Basketball: New Paltz Hawks @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 25th 2025

Plattsburgh State's Selma Deisez (4) with the three from the corner as part of a 6-point afternoon. It would be a battle between a couple of the top teams, SUNYAC Women's Basketball, as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the New Paltz Hawks in front of 175 fans. The game would start well for the top team in the conference as the New Paltz Hawks would have the 24-16 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the defense would step up for the Cardinals as they would hold the Hawks to just eight points, a score of their own, and tie the game at 32 as they entered the intermission. When the teams return for the third quarter, the game stays tight, as the Cardinals win the quarter 17-15 and have the 49-47 lead as they enter the fourth quarter. Also, in the third quarter, we would have a milestone event as Payton Couture would get her 1,000 points as a Cardinal. In the fourth quarter, the Hawks offense would come alive and have a 23-12 quarter as they would secure the 70-61 victory. In the winning effort for the Hawks, they would go to 11-6 in the season, and Abby Korzekwinski would lead all scorers with twenty points in the afternoon. As for the Cardinals, they would fall to 10-6 on the season as Jaden Wilson would have a team-high 16 points. Gallery

Peru Nighthawks @ Plattsburgh Hornets Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Basketball Januaty 24th 2025

Peru's Trenten Taylor (15) and Plattsburgh's Bryan Kemokai (2) rise and battle for the game's opening tip. It would be Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Basketball action from Plattsburgh as the home Hornets would meet up with the rival crosstown Peru Nighthawks on a Friday Night. The game would start well for the Hornets as they would start by doubling up the Nighthawks at 16-8 after the first quarter. The teams would be a little more equal in the second quarter, but the Hornets would win the quarter slightly at 9-7 and take the 25-15 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Hornets would be hot, double up the Nighthawks again, this time at 20-10, and take the 45-25 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, with the outcome of the game no longer in doubt, the teams would empty the benches, and the Nighthawks would win the fourth quarter at 10-6, but it would not be enough on this day as the Hornets would get the 51-35 victory. In the winning effort, the Hornets will go to 8-4 on the season as they head on the road tomorrow with a nonleague game against the Ogdensburg Blue Devils. As for the Nighthawks, they dropped another one and are now 1-11 on the season, and they will return to action Monday as they go on the road to take on Schroon Lake/Newcomb. Gallery

Beekmantown's Carter Lapier (16) broke up the play on Malone's Parker Russell scoring attempt. The Beekmantown Eagles will be back in action at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena this Friday evening as they leave the section. The host was the Malone Huskies from Section X. The game would start well for the home Eagles as they would get the game's opening goals, which made it a 1-0 game at the 7:14 mark of the first period. The Huskies would keep fighting and get the tying goal at the 11:40 mark of the period on the goal from Parker Russell. Although with just under two minutes left in the period, the Eagles could regain the lead at 2-1 when Parker Pryce would light a lamp, and that's how they would head into the first intermission. When the teams would return for the second period, the Huskies would waste little time tying the game up again, this time from Tristan Russell at the 3:16 mark. The game would stay there till the 14:00 mark of the period. Novak Jarus would get his second goal 3-2 lead at the end of the second period. When we returned for the third, the Huskies would fight and tie the game up again for the third time in the evening, with Jake Kaska's goal at the 3:41 mark of the third period. The Eagle would ming and retake the lead, this time at 4-3, on the Mason Carter goal. And t, and in the closing seconds of the game, Novak Jarus added his third goal on the empty netter to secure the 5-3 win. With the win, the Eagles would go to 8-4-1 on the season. They are back in action tomorrow against Bellows Falls. As for the Malone Huskies, they fall to 8-5 on the season and will be back in action on January 29th with a home contest against the Norwood-Norfolk Iceman. Gallery

SUNYAC Men's Hockey: Potsdam State Bears @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 23rd 2025

With the crunching hit along the boards, Plattsburgh State's Brandon Butler (23) sends Potsdam State's Mason Hohen (7) into the air along the board in the corner. It would be the return of the battle of the North Country as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host their travel partners, the Potsdam State Bears, from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of 1,000 fans on poster night with the rare midweek game. The upset-minded Bears would get the game's opening goal on the powerplay from Eli Douhart-Wood at the 10:45 mark of the first period. The Cardinals would keep coming and equalize the game at one with the Kevin Weaver Vitale goal at the 17:16 mark of the period. Then, with just 25 seconds left in the period, the Cardinals would take the 2-1 lead on the goal from Jake Sacratini, and that's how they would head to the intermission. The game would stay until the 12:09 mark of the second period when Brody Spencer Ha would extend the lead to 3-1. The Bears would not be going away on this night as they would make it a one-goal game at the 17:21 mark on the Michael Campbell goal, and we would head to the second intermission with the Cardinals having the 3-2 lead. The Cardinal offense would be on fire in the third period, scoring four goals in just 8 minutes. Aaron Catron would score twice, and Patrick Cole and Jake Sacratini would score to make it a 7-2 game. The Bears would get a late goal with about two minutes left when Payton Felix would score on the powerplay, but the Cardinals would hold on for the 7-3 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals go to 9-7-1 on the season as Jacob Hearne would make 27 saves on the night, and they will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to take on Amherst. It would be the biggest rivalry in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey as it would be the first meeting of the year between the #10 Saranac Spartans and the Beekmantown Eagles from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in what might be the first of three meetings on the season as they have to meet for the title in 3 out of the last 4 year season. It would be a very physically hard-hitting game from the start as both teams were trying to show they were the dominant team on this day. Both teams would have their chances, but there would be no scoring in the first period. The Eagles would break and get the game's opening goal on the shorthand at the 11:36 mark of the period when Mason Carter would light the lamp and make it a 1-0 game in what would be the period's lone goal. The Spartans would keep coming and get the tying goal just 4:23 into the third period on the Jackson Coryer goal. The Eagles would return and get the lead again when Novak Jarus beat Shawn McLane at 11:29 to regain the lead at 2-1. Then, in the game's final minute, Edward Sweenor would add the empty netter to put the icing on the cake in the 3-1 victory. In the winning effort for the Eagles, they will go to 7-4-1 on the season as Jack Bell makes 31 saves in the win as they head into their nonleague game Friday against the Malone Huskies. As for the Spartans, they will look to get back on the winning way as they will play #3 Ogdensburg Blue Devils on Saturday. NCAA Division III Men's Hockey: Williams Ephs @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 18th 2025

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be back in action with the second game of their fight cancer weekend, this time against another nonconference opponent, the Williams Ephs, at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena with over 1300 fans in attendance. The game would not start well for the home Cardinals as they would give up three first-period goals in six minutes from 6:53 to 12:59 when Connor Berg, David Vieten, and Mel Mortaerlli would score for the Ephs. The Cardinals would answer back with 2 two goals from Patrick Cole in 56 seconds, with one on the powerplay to make it a 3-2 game. Unfortunately, the Cardinal comeback would be cut short when the Ephs scored with 1:36 left in the period, thanks to Bobby Vorkey to make it a 4-2 game, and that's how the first period would end/ In the second period; the Cardinals would have the lone goal of the period from Vlad Pshenichnikov when he would score at the 11:39 mark of the period to make it a 4-3 game after two periods. In the third period, the Ephs would regain their two-goal lead at 7:01 when William Yee scored. The Cardinals could cut the lead back to one when Patrick Cole would score at the 12:36 mark of the period to make it a 5-4 game. The Cardinals would appear at the game at five in the closing minutes, but the goal would eventually be waived off on a delayed offsides call, and the Ephs would get the 5-4 victory. In the winning effort for the Ephs, Cal Sandquist would make 26 saves as they go to 6-7-1 on the season and head into their next game against the Colby Mules. As for the Cardinals, they will fall to 8-7-1 on the season as they head back to conference play on Wednesday against the Potsdam State Bears. Gallery
