The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would open up the conference portion of their season as they would host the New Paltz Hawks in doubleheader action. The first game would be low scoring affair as the Cardinals would get single runs in the third and fourth innings. The scoring plays would come from Langdon in the third on a bunt rbi and a rbi double by Gentile for the 2-0 win. In the winning effort, Golino would go the distance for a shutout win while striking out six as they go to 4-7 on the season. After about a twenty break the teams would return for the second game of the doubleheader. The scoring would start quickly in the second game as the teams would trade runs in the second thanks to a rbi single by Maggiacomo to tie the game at one after two innings. Although the tie would not last long as the Hawks would get 3 runs in the top of third for a 4-1 lead. Although in the bottom of the fourth inning the Cardinals would explode for eight runs thanks in large part to a three rbi triple by Langdon to take the 9-4 lead and that's where the game would stay for the win. In the win, the Cardinals would earn the sweep on the day as Kristina Maggiacomo would strike out 12 in the complete-game win as they go to 5-7 on the season. Plattsburgh State's Logan Mitchell (41) with the low shot on the net. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would return home after a few weeks away and play the rival Oswego State Lakers in SUNYAC action. The game would not start off good for the Cardinals as the Lakers would shut them out in the first quarter with a 6-0 quarter on the strength of a pair of goals by Corey O'Connor. In the second quarter, the Cardinals would get on the board but the Lakers would win the quarter 5-3 with Cardinal goals by Stephen Kane (twice) and John Eiseman but would trail at the break 11-3. When the teams would return for the third quarter the Lakers would stay on top with a 5-2 quarter with John Eiseman (second and third of the night) and the Cardinals would trail 16-5 as they go to the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Cardinals still had no with a lakers 3-2 quarter scoring for the Cardinals again would be Kane and Eiseman. Although it would not be enough on this day as the Cardinals fall to 2-7 on the season and will be back in action on April 5th as they take on #15 St. Lawerence. Gallery

It would be nonleague action that would feature the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the Russell Sage Gators from the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Lacrosse complex. The game would start off good for the Cardinals as they would jump out on the Gators with a 6-0 quarter on goals from Nicole Resnick, Caroline Noia, Emily Caoili, Melanie Winters, and Jordan Kowalski (twice). In the second quarter, the Cardinals would keep the firepower going with a 6-3 quarter on goals from Caitlin Nash, Kate Kennedy (twice), Fiona Fitzgerald, and Caroline Noia (twice) and take the 12-3 lead into the half. When the teams came back for the second half the defenses on both sides would step up as for the half the Cardinals would win 3-2 on goals from Kate Kennedy (third), Jordan Kowalski (third), and Emily Caoili (second) as they secure the 15-5 victory. It would be a nonleague matchup at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Soccer/Lacrosse Complex as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Clarkson Golden Knights in Women's Lacrosse. The first quarter of the game would not go well for the Cardinals as they would be down 7-2 with the lone goals for the Cardinals would come from Fiona Fitzgerald and Caroline Noia while scoring for the Golden Knights would be Madelynn Barnum (four), Hailey Millington (twice) and Sofie Mangino. In the second quarter, the Golden Knights would put the game out of reach with a 7-0 quarter and take the 14-2 lead at the break scoring for the Golden Knights would be Mia Petrone, Julia Lavarnway (three), Sydney Roderick, Madelynn Barnum (fifth) and Grace Hagberg. When the teams returned for the third quarter the Golden Knights would let off the gas with a 3-0 quarter and take the 17-2 into the fourth on goals from Julia Lavarnway (fourth) Hailey Millington(third) and Sydney Roderick (second). In the fourth quarter with the game in hand, the Cardinals would actually get the quarter 3-1 on goals from Rachel LaMar, Caroline Noia (second), and Maddy Garcia while Julia Patterson would score for the Golden Knights for the 18-5 victory. The Golden Knights' netminders would combine for five saves as they go to 6-0 while the Cardinals combine for 18 saves as they go to 1-3 on the season. Gallery

Plattsburgh graduate forward Annie Katonka leads the celebration of a go-ahead goal in the third period of the third-place game at the 2022 Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championships. The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team claimed third place at the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championships with a 3-2 victory over Elmira College Saturday at Chip Kenyon Arena in Middlebury, VT

With both teams coming off semifinal losses the night prior, it was Elmira who jumped on the scoreboard first in the consolation game.

Freshman forward McKenzie Schmidt carried the puck into the offensive zone, but quickly lost possession to Plattsburgh defenseman Sierra Benjamin. Benjamin was unable to clear the puck out of the zone, instead finding the stick of Elmira freshman forward Claire Elfring, who sent a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle to beat Plattsburgh goaltender Lilla Nease on the blocker side.

Despite a 12-8 advantage in shots in the opening period, the Cardinals went to intermission with a 1-0 deficit.

Plattsburgh tied things up early in the second period, with a goal from senior forward Nicole Unsworth. Elmira goaltender Leonie-Louise Kuehberger made the save on a shot from junior forward Ivy Boric, and Unsworth – fresh off the bench – picked up the rebound, moved the puck to her backhand as she skated across the slot, and deposited it into the open net.

A bit more than four-minute later, the Soaring Eagles regained the lead. Junior forward Kelly Millins forced a turnover in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the offensive zone, where she left a no-look drop pass to senior defenseman Brianna Haviland. Haviland passed the puck to senior forward Brooke McArdle, whose shot from the left hash marks was tipped by Millins for the goal.

Down 2-1, the Cardinals were intent on drawing level before the second intermission, and the powerplay unit did it in final minute of the second period.

Benjamin sent in a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle toward the far post. Boric had her stick tied up with Elmira senior forward Morgan Mordini at the top of the crease, but managed to get just enough contact with the puck to redirect it through Kuehberger's five-hole.

Plattsburgh thought they had the lead at the 11:58 mark of the third period with a Boric wrap-around into an open net, but after video review, the goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference by Katinka.

The Cardinals took the lead for real just three minutes later, this time scored by Katonka off an assist by Boric. Katonka found Boric in the neutral zone, who skated it in and left the drop pass to return it to Katinka. The shot from the high slot beat Kuehberger high on the glove side.

Elmira pulled Kuehberger late in the period to try to come back and got a reprieve when a Plattsburgh shot at the empty net hit the post and settled in the crease, but the Cardinals held on for the 3-2 win.
Kuehberger made 30 saves on the 33 shots she faced in the Elmira net, while Nease stopped 18 of 20.

With the final result, Plattsburgh finished the season in third place with a record of 26-3-1, while fourth-placed Elmira finished with a record of 25-4-1. Gallery

The Middlebury College women's ice hockey team poses with the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championship trophy. The Middlebury College women's ice hockey team made history Saturday, defeating Gustavus Adolphus College 3-2 in overtime of the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey National Championship at Chip Kenyon Arena in Middlebury, Vermont.

The win capped off the first-ever perfect season in Division III women's ice hockey, and the first unbeaten season since Plattsburgh's 2007 run.

The hosts got on the board in style in the first period with a short-handed goal at 13:44, as the Panthers were on the second of back-to-back penalty kills.

Junior forward Jenna Letterie extended her stick to break up a pass to the far point off a faceoff won by the Golden Gusties and followed the puck into the neutral zone to set herself on the breakaway. Junior goaltender Katie McCoy appeared to make the save, but the puck trickled through the five-hole for the goal.

Gustavus Adolphus was able to draw level on a power play at 12:30 in the second period. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Holland passed the puck to Junior forward Emily Olson below the goal line. Olson patiently waited a second behind the goal before finding Junior forward Clara Billings in the slot for the one-time shot inside the far post.

Middlebury regained the with under three minutes remaining in the third period. Letterie forced a turnover in the neutral zone that set up senior forward Katie Hargrave for a shot from the high slot. McCoy made the save, but senior captain Madie Leidt got to the rebound on the blocker side first and shot it on the backhand for the go-ahead goal.

With Gustavus Adolphus on the power play late in the game, a video review of the time on the clock at 16 seconds resulted in an additional 2 seconds on the clock that would prove to be crucial.

After the Golden Gusties put a flurry of shots on Middlebury goaltender Sophia Merageas at the end of the period, the clock hit zero and the Panthers began their celebrations, but a lengthy video review showed that a backhanded rebound shot by junior forward Molly McHugh crossed the line with 0.1 seconds on the clock, sending the teams to overtime.

In tense overtime in which both teams had several scoring chances, Middlebury senior forward Ellie Barney put the game away at 13:17 of the extra period. Junior defenseman Eva Henrikson found Barney with a stretch pass out of the defensive end, and although McCoy stopped the initial shot, Barney put away her own rebound to season the championship.

Merageas stopped 29 of the 31 shots she faced in the win, while McCoy saved 25 of 28 shots in the loss.

With the win, the Panthers completed a perfect 27-0-0 season with a National Championship, while the runner-up Gustavus Adolphus finished at 25-4-2. Gallery

The Harvard Crimson have crowned the 2022 ECAC Men's Hockey champions in the overtime win over #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats. It would be the finals of the ECAC Men's Hockey Championship from the Herb Brooks Arena in front of 4400 fans for the first time since the covid-19 pandemic had started and it would feature the #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats and #3 Harvard Crimson. The upset-minded Crimson knew the only way they were headed to the NCAA was with a win go off to a quick start on a goal just 1:07 into the game from Ryan Siedem for the early lead. Although the Bobcats would not let the Crimson have the lead long as they would tie the game up at one on the TJ Friedmann goal at the 5:24 mark of the period. The game would stay there till the 9:24 mark of the second period on the powerplay goal from Ian Moore. The game would remain through the rest of the second period and most of the third period until there was 6:16 left in the game the Bobcats would tie the game up on the powerplay goal from Jayden Lee and eventually send the game to overtime. In the overtime, the Crimson would get the game-winner at the 9:18 mark from Matthew Coronato to secure the 3-2 victory and the automatic qualifier spot for the ECAC Hockey. In the winning effort, Matthew Gibson would make 47 saves as they will now head to the NCAA Tournament against Minnesota State while Quinnipiac's Yaniv Perets would make 14 saves but still get the invite to the NCAA Tournament and will take on St. Cloud State. Quinnipiac's Griffin Mendel (6) with the poke check on Colgate's Alex Dipaolo (28) as they broke into the offensive zone, it would be the return of the ECAC Men's Hockey championships after a 2-year break because of the Covid-19 pandemic to Lake Placid and the Herb Brooks Arena and the fans would welcome them back with 4200 in attendance. The first semi-final of the day would feature the #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats and the #5 Colgate Red Raiders with the winner looking to play for a title on Saturday night. The game would start of good for top seeded bobcats as they would get the opening goal of the game at the 9:23 mark of the first period on the powerplay from Joey Cipollone for the 1-0 lead. The Bobcats would expand their lead to 2-0 with 3:17 left in the first period on the goal by Michael Lombardi as they would end the first period. Although the Red Raiders would come out in the second period and looking to get back in the game and they would on the Griffin Lunn goal just 4:13 into the period. Although that would be the only goal of the period and the Bobcats would hold the 2-1 lead as the second period would come to an end. The teams would go back and forth in the third period and just about halfway through the third period the Bobcats would regain the two goal lead at 3-1 on the Wyatt Bongiovanni. From there the Bobcats would clamp down on the defense and hold on for the 3-1 win. In the winning effort Quinnipiac's Yaniv Perets would make saves on the night as they head back to the ECAC Championship against the winner of Clarkson and Harvard while Colgate's Mitch Benson would make 30 saves in the lose. Harvard's Nick Abruzzese (8) with the goal on the rebound to give the Crimson the 2-1 lead. It would be semi-final game number 2 and #2 Clarkson Golden Knights would take on the #3 Harvard Crimson as the Knights would look to retain their title in Lake Placid as they won the last tournament before the shutdown of Covid-19 back in 2019. The game would start off good for the upset minded Crimson as they would get the opening goal from Sean Farrell at the 8:20 mark of the first period. Although the Knights would not end the period quietly as they would get the equalizer with just over five minutes left in the period on the Alex Campbell powerplay goal. The game would stay there till the 10:59 mark of the second period when the Crimson would regain the lead at 2-1 on the Nick Abruzzese goal. Although the Golden Knights would tie the game back up again just two minutes later on the goal by Alex Campbell for the second time on the night and both on the powerplay. Then with just over three minutes left in the period the Golden Knights would get there first lead of the game on the Zach Tsekos goal and make it 3-2 Golden Knights leaded headed to the third period. Although the lead would be short lived as the Crimson would tie game up at the 4:23 mark of the period on Nick Abruzzeses second goal of the game. Then with just under five minutes left in the game the Crimson would take the lead for the third and final time on the night on the Matthew Coronato goal at 4-3 and would also add the empty netter in the closing seconds of the game. In the winning effort the Harvard Crimson advance to the ECAC Hockey Championship against the #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats and Mitchell Gibson would make 24 saves on the night while Clarkson's Ethan Haider would make 29 saves in the losing effort. Plattsburgh sophomore forward Rivers Morris pokes the puck away from Gustavus Adolphus junior Emily Olson in the neutral zone. The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team saw its quest for another NCAA Division III national championship end in the semifinal round Friday with a 5-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College at Chip Kenyon Arena in Middlebury, Vermont.

The game could hardly have started better for the defending champions, as senior defenseman Emma Killeen put the Cardinals on the board just 1:21 into the game with a snipe from the left point to the blocker side.

The elation from that goal was short-lived, however. Just 45 seconds after Killeen’s goal, junior forward Molly McHugh tied the game for the Golden Gusties off an assist from senior forward Kristina Press and junior forward Hailey Holland.

Holland gained the lead for Gustavus Adolphus at 13:25 of the first period with what would prove to be the game-winner. Press and Holland crossed paths below the goal line, and once Press was behind the Plattsburgh goal, causing goaltender Chloe Beaubien to shift to the far post, she passed the puck back to Holland for the tap-in goal.

The Golden Gusties outshot the Cardinals in the opening period 12-4.

Gustavus Adolphus kept the pressure on Plattsburgh in the second period, scoring a power-play goal just before three minutes to cushion their lead. Holland corralled a pass from senior defenseman Kayla Vrieze and sent a shot in from the right faceoff circle, which was saved by Beaubien before Press jumped on the rebound to send the puck home.

Just 21 seconds later, the Cardinals appeared to cut the deficit to 1 with a goal off a deflection by sophomore forward Mae Olshansky, but after a lengthy video review, the goal was disallowed due to a high stick.

With the goal overturned, the Golden Gusties rode the momentum the rest of the way.

Gustavus Adolphus ended the second period with a 4-1 lead, scoring a shorthanded goal on Plattsburgh’s only power play of the game. Sophomore forward Brooke Power picked the pocket of graduate defenseman Erin McArdle at the Gustavus blue line and skated in alone on substitute goaltender Ashley Davis for the unassisted goal.

Gustavus Adolphus freshman forward Hannah Gray scored the only goal of the third period unassisted at the 4:49 mark. Gray blocked a shot from junior defenseman Mack Emery at the Gustavus blue line and hustled to get the puck in the neutral zone. Gray sent a wrist shot from just outside the left faceoff dot that slipped just below Davis’s blocker.

In net for the Cardinals, Beaubien and David made 13 and 17 shots, respectively. Gustavus Adolphus goaltender Katie McCoy made 15 saves as the Golden Gusties led shot 35-16

With the win, Gustavus Adolphus advanced to the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship game Saturday against hosts Middlebury College, while Plattsburgh fell to the third-place game against Elmira College.
