PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals opened their season in impressive fashion, defeating the Castleton State Spartans 4-1 at the Plattsburgh State Field House in front of 350 fans. The game did not start the way the Cardinals had hoped, as Castleton struck first in the 14th minute. Gwen Bridges found the back of the net on a deflection, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. Plattsburgh answered immediately. Just one minute later, Bailee LaFountain scored her first goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure and took the lead for good in the 26th minute. Alana Delacruz capitalized on a rebound and buried a shot into a wide-open net, putting Plattsburgh ahead 2-1 heading into halftime. In the second half, the Cardinals kept control of the match. LaFountain added her second goal of the game in the 76th minute, finding the corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-1. LaFountain was not finished. In the 86th minute, she completed the hat trick when her shot ricocheted off the post and into the net, giving Plattsburgh a commanding 4-1 lead. The Cardinals held on from there to secure the season-opening victory and improve to 1-0. Plattsburgh dominated throughout the contest, recording 36 shots on goal. The Cardinals' goalkeeping unit combined for 13 saves in the win. Plattsburgh will look to move to 2-0 when it travels to take on Farmington State on Saturday. It would be the 2025-2026 season openers for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the Castleton State Spartans from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of 1100 fans. The Cardinals would get the opening goal of the game at the 16:51 mark of the first period. Patrick Cole would give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The Spartans would answer right back 1:10 later on a shorthanded goal by Emmett McHardy to tie the game at 1. The Cardinals would come back and retake the lead at 2-1 on the Blake Hall goal 4:06 into the second period. Then, in the closing minutes of the period, the Cardinals would add three quick ones from Gabriel Filion (twice) and Aaron Catron to give them the 5-1 lead at the end of the second period. Then, in the third period, the Cardinals would put the icing on the cake at the 13:41 mark on the power-play goal by Jake Sacratini to secure the 6-1 victory. It would be the home opener for the 2025 Plattsburgh State Women's Lacrosse team as they would host the Castleton State Spartans in nonconference action. The home Cardinals would get off to a good start as they would have the 7-3 lead after the first quarter as Leah Klotz (three), Rachel Lamar, Nicole Resnick, Cynthia Barnosky, and Maddy Garcia would score for the Cardinals. In the second quarter, it would stay the same for the Cardinals as they would have another 7-3 quarter on goals from Tabor Iohseriio, Leah Klotz (twice), Caitlin Nash, Maddy Garcia (twice), and Ashley O'Hara as they take the 14-6 lead into the intermission. When the teams would return for the third quarters, the Spartans would make their best stand with a 4-3 quarter scoring for the Cardinals, which would be Alex LaDue (twice) and Cynthia Barnosky for the 17-9 Cardinals lead. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals would finish off the Spartans with an 8-1 quarter, and scoring for the Cardinals would be Caitlin Nash (third), Ashley O'Hara, Maddy Garcia, Rachel Lamar, Chase Calandra, and Isabella Girard as the Cardinals get the 25-11 victory. It would be the second day of the Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic, and the opening game would be a matchup between Little East Conference and SUYAC foes as the Potsdam Stae Bears would take on the Castleton State Spartans. The game would start low scoring as they were feeling each other out, as the Bears would have a slim 10-8 lead after the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, the offenses for both teams would start to get in a rhyme in the early season contest as the Bears would win the quarter 20-12 and take the 30-20. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Bears would stay hot and win the quarter 16-11 and take the 46-31 lead into the 4th quarter. In the fourth quarter, the teams would play even throughout, and the Spartans would have the slim win of 14-13, but it would not be enough as the Bears would get the 59-45 victories. In the winning effort for the Bears, Xy'el Bradford would lead the way with 19 points as they went to 2-2 on the season. Plattsburgh State's Imani Walcott (23) banks it off the backboard for the score as part of a sixteen-point night, It would be the last game of the Cardinal Classic and between the host Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the Castleton State Spartans in what would be the third-place game as they were both coming off losses. The game would start well for the home Cardinals as they would start with a 17-10 lead after the 1st quarter. However, in the second quarter, the Spartans would come charging back with a 20-12 quarter and the Spartans would have a slim 30-29 lead at the intermission. When the teas returned from the intermission break the Spartanns would use the quarter to take control of the game with a 20-9 quarter and 50-38 lead overall. In that fourth quarter, the Cardinals would do everything they could to get back in the game but all they could do was cut the deficit in half with a 21-15 quarter giving the Spartans the 65-59 victory. In the losing effort, Payton Couture would lead the Cardinals with a game-high 20 points as they go to 2-2 on the season.
