The Saranac Spartans would start the home portion of their 2024-2025 campaign after a perfect 2-0 weekend in Syracuse as they would welcome in Section VI foe and Division 1 team, the Grand Island Vikings. The game would start well for the visiting Vikings as they would get the opening goal in the first 90 seconds from Kyle Kowalczewski for the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there til midway through the period when the Vikings would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Ricky Kwarciak goal, and that's where the first period would end. The Spartans would get on the board at the 5:46 mark of the second period when Evan Patrie would find the net on the wrister and make it a 2-1 game. Then, about 30 seconds later, the Spartans would tie the game at two on the Ryan Campbell goal. The Vikings would return and retake the lead at 3-2 on the powerplay goal from Jaxon Montana. Then, after a miscue in the Spartan's end, the Vikings would break out on the breakaway, and Donovan Heacock would score to make it a 4-2 Vikings game with about 2:30 left in the second period, and that's where the period would end. The Spartans would make it a 4-3 one-goal game just 2:31 into the third period on the Ashtyn Catlin goal. The Spartans would have their chances through the rest of the period, including a couple of powerplays and even five-on-three powerplays, but they could not get the equalizer on the night, and the Vikings would get the 4-3 win. In the winning effort, the Grand Island Vikings go to 2-0-1 on the season as they head into their game against Germantown. As for the Saranac Spartans, they fall to 2-1 on the season as they will take on another section 6 team, the Kenmore East Bulldogs, tomorrow back at AC North Arena. Gallery

Beekmantown's Keegan Rodier (15) puts the puck in the back of the net on the breakaway for one of his two goals on the afternoon. The Beekmantown Eagles would be back in action as they would host the Grand Island Vikings from western New York in nonleague action. The Eagles would stay hot from the previous weekend. It wouldn't take long for the Eagles to get on the board, just 3:34, on a goal by Sam Bingel for the first period's lone goal. The Eagles would strike again just five minutes into the second period on a goal by Reagan Dudyak. Then, in the closing minutes of the period, the Eagles would take control of the game on Sam Bingel's second goal and give the Eagles the 3-0 lead. Then, just over a minute into the third period, the Eagles would strike again with Luke Moser's goal. Then the Eagles would finish scoring, and Keegan Rodier would score twice to close out the period and give them the 6-0 lead. Then, with four minutes left in the game, the Vikings would get on the board on Jamie Wright's goal to avoid the shutout and have a 6-1 final. In the winning effort, the Eagles would go to 3-0 on the season and be back in action the next day against the Kenmore East Bulldogs. Gallery

Plattsburgh's Ty Calkin (31) with the glove save in the opening period to keep the game close. The Plattsburgh Hornets would host the Grand Island Vikings in nonconference action. The Vikings would strike twice and quick as they would have a 209 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Although the Hornets wouldn't let that stop them as they would score at the 445 marks on the Brandt Clarke goal to make it 2-1. That would be the scoring for the first period and stay there til 3:42 mark when the Vikings would extend the lead to 3-1. The Vikings would extend there lead to 4-1 on a last-minute goal in the second period. The Hornets would do there best to bounce back with a goal by Ethan Kay in the first two minutes of the third to make it 4-2. Although that would be it as Grand Island gets an empty netter late for the 5-2 win. In the losing effort, the Hornets fall to 0-2 on the season. Gallery.

The Beekmantown boys hockey team was unable to hold off its highly ranked opposition Saturday, falling 4-2 to Grand Island at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The game began well for the home team, as the Eagles held the Vikings - ranked No. 2 in Division 2 by the New York State Sportswriters Association - scoreless in the first period. Beekmantown added to that defensive effort with a Collin Latinville goal midway through the second period to take the lead. That lead was short-lived, though, as Grand Island scored a powerplay goal less than 5 minutes later to tie the game and tacked on an even-strength tally before the end of the period. Mounting a comeback became a more difficult task for Eagles only 21 seconds into the third period, as Grand Island captain Brian ONeill hit a sniping shot from the blue line for his second goal of the day. With 11 minutes remaining in the game, Dylan Bush made the lead 4-1 for the Vikings. Beekmantown looked to take advantage of special teams play to get back in the game, as a flurry of penalties - including a major for the board by Bush - gave the Eagles a 4-on-3 power play. A Grand Island defenseman pushed Gavin Fessette into Vikings goaltender Bobbie Currie with the puck approaching the crease, giving Alex Brienza an open net to shoot at to double the Eagles' score.
