The Saranac Spartans picked up a key Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory Tuesday evening, defeating the Plattsburgh Hornets 2-0 in boys soccer action. Saranac wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just four minutes into the match, Nolan Hamel found the back of the net to give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. The goal set the tone for a strong first-half effort by the visitors, who controlled play and kept creating chances. The Spartans added to their lead in the 35th minute when Hamel delivered a deep strike for his second goal of the game. The tally gave Saranac a comfortable 2-0 cushion heading into halftime. The second half featured solid defending from both sides. While each team generated chances in the attacking third, neither side capitalized as the defenses and goalkeepers stood firm. Saranac successfully protected its lead for the final 40 minutes to secure the shutout victory. With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-2 on the season and will look to carry that momentum into their next matchup on the road against Northeastern Clinton. It would be a battle in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boys' Soccer as the Northeastern Clinton Cougars would meet up with the Peru Nighthawks in Champlain, New York, as the conference title would be on the line. The Nighthawks would get the lone goal in the first half from Deacon Whittmarsh as they would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime. When the teams returned for the second half, the Nighhawks would stay on the gas pedal, and they would add a pair of goals from Deacon Whittmarsh and Seanan Edwards as they secured the 3-0 victory and were crowned co-champs for the regular season. In the winning effort, the Nighthawks are 12-1 on the season and will finish the season out against Saranac Lake next week. As for the Northeastern Clinton, they will finish their season next week. It would be the Northern Regional Finals of the NYSPHSAA Class D Boy's Soccer tournament, and it would feature the #3 Heuvelton Bulldogs from Section X and the #4 Chazy Eagles from Section VII from the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse with a berth to the final four on the line. The Eagles would waste little time getting on the board in the 7th minute of the game on the masterful shot from Landon Duprey for the Eagle's 1-0 lead. The defenses would be on the mark for the rest of the half, as that would be the only half score. When the teams returned for the second half, the Eagles would strike early again, this time in the 43rd minute as Jacoby Weeden with the touch to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead. The Eagles would have their defense up to the task the rest of the game as they would hold on for the 2-0 lead and get the return trip to Middletown and the final four next weekend as they go to 17-2-1 on the season. It would be the Class D Section VII Boy's Soccer Championship from Beekmantown High School, and there would be a traditional powerhouse there; still, this time, they would be the underdog as they would come in as the #2 seed and take on the #1 Keene Beavers, with the winner headed to the New York State tournament. The Chazy Eagles would be looking to defend their title and would get the game's opening goal at the 15-minute mark from Madox Tyndall to make it a 1-0 game, and that is where the game would stay through the first half. The game would stay there till the 55th minute when the Eagles and Tyndall would score again and take control of the game at 2-0. That is where the game would finish, and the Eagles would win as they go 17-2-1 in the season and will take on the winner of Section X on November 9th in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. It would be the Section VII Class B Boy's Soccer championship from the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse as the #1 Northeastern Clinton Cougars would take on the #2 Saranac Spartans with a berth in the New York state tournament on the line. The Cougars would waste little time in getting the game's opening goal as Evias Carpenter would score in the second minute to give them the early 1-0 lead. The defenses on both sides would stand tall for the rest of the half as neither team would score again in the half. When the teams would return for the second half, the Cougars would give themselves some breathing room in the 66th minute on the goal from Ashton Turner, and from there, the Cougars would hold on for the 2-0 win and be crowned the 2024 Section VII Class B Champions for the second year in a row as they will enter the tournament with an 11-2-4 record ranked 18th in the state and will take on the undefeated and number 4 team in the state Menachicsville in the opening round.
