PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh Hornets hosted the Northeastern Clinton Cougars in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls soccer action at the Plattsburgh Athletic Complex on Wednesday. The two teams traded blows throughout the first half, creating scoring chances on both ends of the field. However, neither side found the back of the net, and the game remained scoreless heading into halftime. The evenly matched play continued through much of the second half as both teams searched for the game's first goal. The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute when Lexi Arno capitalized on a scoring opportunity to give Northeastern Clinton a 1-0 advantage. Arno was not finished. Just one minute later, she struck again to extend the Cougars' lead to 2-0 and provide some valuable insurance. From there, the Northeastern Clinton defense clamped down, preventing the Hornets from mounting a comeback and preserving the shutout victory. With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-4 and will return to action Thursday when they host the Saranac Spartans. Meanwhile, the Hornets fall to 0-5-1 and will keep searching for their first win next week when they travel to face the Saranac Spartans. Gallery

The Saranac Spartans picked up a key Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory Tuesday evening, defeating the Plattsburgh Hornets 2-0 in boys soccer action. Saranac wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just four minutes into the match, Nolan Hamel found the back of the net to give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. The goal set the tone for a strong first-half effort by the visitors, who controlled play and kept creating chances. The Spartans added to their lead in the 35th minute when Hamel delivered a deep strike for his second goal of the game. The tally gave Saranac a comfortable 2-0 cushion heading into halftime. The second half featured solid defending from both sides. While each team generated chances in the attacking third, neither side capitalized as the defenses and goalkeepers stood firm. Saranac successfully protected its lead for the final 40 minutes to secure the shutout victory. With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-2 on the season and will look to carry that momentum into their next matchup on the road against Northeastern Clinton. PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Northern Adirondack Bobcats continued their strong early-season play with a decisive 12-0 victory over the Seton Catholic Knights in Section VII girls soccer action. Northern Adirondack took control from the opening whistle, erupting for seven goals in the first half to build a commanding lead. The Bobcats stayed on the attack after the break, adding five more goals in the second half to complete the shutout win. The Bobcats put together a balanced offensive effort, with multiple players finding the scoresheet, including two players who each scored a pair of goals. Northern Adirondack's defense was equally effective, holding Seton Catholic scoreless throughout. With the victory, Northern Adirondack improves to 3-1 on the season. Seton Catholic falls to 0-1 after its season opener. Both teams return to action Monday. Castleton State's Chloe Green scored the deflection goal over the Cardinal's Lily Bailey for the 10 lead. PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals opened their season in impressive fashion, defeating the Castleton State Spartans 4-1 at the Plattsburgh State Field House in front of 350 fans. The game did not start the way the Cardinals had hoped, as Castleton struck first in the 14th minute. Gwen Bridges found the back of the net on a deflection, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. Plattsburgh answered immediately. Just one minute later, Bailee LaFountain scored her first goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure and took the lead for good in the 26th minute. Alana Delacruz capitalized on a rebound and buried a shot into a wide-open net, putting Plattsburgh ahead 2-1 heading into halftime. In the second half, the Cardinals kept control of the match. LaFountain added her second goal of the game in the 76th minute, finding the corner of the net to extend the lead to 3-1. LaFountain was not finished. In the 86th minute, she completed the hat trick when her shot ricocheted off the post and into the net, giving Plattsburgh a commanding 4-1 lead. The Cardinals held on from there to secure the season-opening victory and improve to 1-0. Plattsburgh dominated throughout the contest, recording 36 shots on goal. The Cardinals' goalkeeping unit combined for 13 saves in the win. Plattsburgh will look to move to 2-0 when it travels to take on Farmington State on Saturday. Peru's Connor Baehere (4) with the turn and burn to get by the Northeastern Clinton defender and get inside the box. It would be a battle in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boys' Soccer as the Northeastern Clinton Cougars would meet up with the Peru Nighthawks in Champlain, New York, as the conference title would be on the line. The Nighthawks would get the lone goal in the first half from Deacon Whittmarsh as they would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime. When the teams returned for the second half, the Nighhawks would stay on the gas pedal, and they would add a pair of goals from Deacon Whittmarsh and Seanan Edwards as they secured the 3-0 victory and were crowned co-champs for the regular season. In the winning effort, the Nighthawks are 12-1 on the season and will finish the season out against Saranac Lake next week. As for the Northeastern Clinton, they will finish their season next week.
