NEWHL Women's Hockey Championship: #2 Cortland State Red Dragons @ #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals February 25th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Sara Krauseneck charges down on the goalie and wrist it over the shoulder to give the Cardinals the 2-0 win. It would be the championship game of the Northeast Women's Hockey League and it would feature the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals hosting the #2 Cortland State Red Dragons for the right to go to the NCAA Tournament in front of a crowd of over 600 fans. It would be a tight and physical game through the first period and neither team would be able to turn the red lamp on and they would end the opening 20 where they started tied at zero. The Cardinals would finally get the opening goal of the game 2:23 into the second period when Ciara Wall would score on the rebound and give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead and that is where the game would remain for the rest of the period. Then on the powerplay, just 4:02 into the third Sara Krauseneck would score as she rushed the net to give the Cardinals the 2-0 lead. From there the Cardinal's defense would stand tall and hold on for the victory as they would only give up 16 shots in the game. In the winning effort, Ashley Davis would stand tall for another shutout as the Cardinals would capture their fifth straight NEWHL title and will wait and see if they get the overall number one seed in the tournament when the brackets are relieved Sunday evening. As for the Cortland Stand Red Dragons, their season will come to end at a record of 20-7. Gallery

NEWHL Women's Hockey Semi-finals: #4 Canton Kangaroos @ #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals February 25th 2023

Plattsburgh's State' Lilly Stumm with the scramble goal in front of the net to give them the 4-0 lead. It would be the semi-finals of the Northeast Womens Hockey League and the top-seeded Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be hosting the four-seeded Canton Kangaroos at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of 475 fans. The Cardinals would open up the scoring just 4:47 into the game on the Mae Olshansky goal. Then around the 12:30 mark of the period the Cardinals would get two goals in under a minute from Sara Krauseneck and Holly Schmelzer for the 3-0 lead after the first period. The game would stay there till the 12:05 mark of the second period when Lily Stumm would score to extend the Cardinal's lead to 4-0. Although just over two minutes later the Kangaroos would get on the board to break up the shutout and make it a three-goal game again on the Mathilde Couture goal at 4-1. Then with just over 90 seconds left in the period the Cardinals would regain the four-goal lead at 5-1 on the Su An Cho goal. In the third period, the Cardinals would put the icing on the cake as they would get a pair of goals from Bridget Orr and Sierra Benjamin for the 7-1 victory. In the winning effort, Ashley Davis would make 17 saves as they go to 24-2. With the win, the Cardinals will host the NEWHL Championship next weekend against the winner of Cortland State and Oswego State on March 4th. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Mae Olshansky (21) crashes the net as she goes after her second goal of the afternoon. It would be the home finale for the #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals as they would be facing NEWHL foe the Canton Kangaroos in Women's Hockey at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena. The game would be even through the first period until there was 3:36 left in the period when the Cardinals Mae Olshansky would score to get the Cardinals on the board and take the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period the Cardinals would score again to double there lead at 2-0 on Sara Krauseneck goal. Although the Kangaroos would keep fighting and they would make it a one goal game on the power play goal from Danika Lalonde. Although the one goal game would be short lived as the Cardinals would regain there two goal lead just two minutes later on the Nicole Unsworth goal and make it a 3-1 game. Then in the third period the Cardinals would take control of the game with 9:05 left in the third period on the Sara Krauseneck second goal of the game for the 4-1 lead. From there the Cardinals defense would control the rest of the game and the Cardinals would get the win. In the winning effort Ashley Davis and Chloe Beaubin would combine for 16 saves as they go to 20-2 on the season. Canton's Sirena Alvarez (70) with the stick save as she would have 35 saves on the night. The #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would have a single game on the weekend as they would host the Canton Kangaroos in Northeast Women's Hockey action. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would have their chances throughout the game as they would outshoot the Kangaroos 35-16 on the game. Although the Kangaroos goaltender Sirena Alvarez would stand tall and keep them in the game with 35 saves on the night. The lone goal of the game would come at the 5:24 mark of the second period from Ciara Wall for the Cardinals as the Cardinals would get the 1-0 win. In the winning effort, the Cardinals would go to 15-2 on the season Lilla Nease would make 16 saves on the afternoon for the shutout win. Next for the Cardinals will be a nonleague road game against Williams on January 25th. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Mae Olshansky (18) with the rebound that she stuffs away to give the Cardinals the 4-1. It would be the second game of the weekend series between the #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the Oswego State Lakers in Northeast Women's Hockey League action and the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be looking at the weekend sweep. The Lakers would be looking to end the sweep chances early as they would score 3:40 into the game as Kensie Malone would light the lamp. Although the Cardinals would answer back five minutes later on the Julia Masotta goal to tie the game at one. The game would stay there till the 12:11 mark of the second period when Sara Krauseneck would stuff it in on the short side to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead. Then at the 3:33 mark of the third period the Cardinals would make it a two-goal lead on the Nicole Unsworth goal at 3-1. Then with 4:16 left in the game, the Cardinals would ice the game away and get the 4-1 victory on the Mae Olshansky goal as the Cardinals would get the weekend sweep. In the winning effort, Lilla Nease would make 21 saves as the Cardinals would go to 14-2 on the season. Plattsburgh State's Serra Benjamin (5) with the shot net to give the Cardinals the 3-2 lead in the third period. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would make their home return for the first time since the Thanksgiving day weekend Buster's Panther/Cardinal Classic as they would face off with NEWHL foe the Oswego State Lakers. The Lakers would be out to spoil the Cardinal's homecoming as they would get the first goal of the game at the 6:02 mark of the first period on the shorthand from Kensie Malone. Then at the 11:47 mark of the period they would look to take control of the game as the Lakers would score on the powerplay from Amanda Zenstein for the 2-0 lead. Although the Cardinals would answer in the final 40 seconds of the period on the powerplay with the Mae Olshansky goal to make it 2-1 Lakers after the first period. In the second period, the Cardinals would get the only goal of the period at the 9:09 mark on the powerplay from Nicole Unsworth to tie the game at two. In the third period, the Cardinals would get the first lead of the game at the 13:22 mark of the period from Sierra Benjamin to make it 3-2. Then with 1:55 left in the game, the Cardinals would extend their lead to 4-2 on the Nicole Unsworth powerplay goal. Although the Lakers would not give up easily as they would score 15 seconds from Avery Webster to make it a 4-3 game. In the winning effort, Lilla Nease would make 17 saves on the night as the Cardinals would go to 13-2 on the season. The two teams will be back in action tomorrow to finish up their two-game series at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena. Gallery
