Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic Day 2: Utica Pioneers @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals November 16th 2024 18th 2023
Plattsburgh State's Kayla Johannesen (24) with the three from the wing as the Cardinals would get the 67-40 victory. It would be the last game of the 2024 Holiday Inn Express Cardinal Classic, and it would be the host Plattsburgh State Cardinals from the SUNYAC taking on the Utica Pioneers from the Empire 8 as they would celebrate the 50 years of women's in sports on the NCAA level. The Cardinals would start hard against the Pioneers and have the 22-6 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter, the Pioneers would do their best to slow the Cardinals down, but they would still win the quarter 15-7 and take the 37-13 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Pioneers would have their best offensive quarter as they would score 15, but the Cardinals would still beat them with 21 as they took the 58-28 lead into the 4th quarter. In that fourth quarter, the teams would empty the benches, and the Pioneers would win the quarter 12-9, but the Cardinals would hold for a convincing 67-40 victory. Julia Greek would lead the way with 13 points in the winning effort as the Cardinals scored 2-1 on the season. Plattsburgh State's Mellissa Sheeran (26) drops to a knee for the closer shot on net as part of a two-goal day. The #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #4 Utica Pioneers in the ECAC West Semi-Finals. The game would remain scoreless until the 1:09 mark of the second period when Mackenize Millen would score for the Cardinals to make it 1-0. The Cardinals would extend there lead to 2-0 on Melissa Sheeran's goal at 13:49. Then just 17 seconds later the Pioneers would score to keep it a one-goal game. The Cardinals would regain the two-goal lead at 3-1 on Erin Brand's powerplay goal. Then just 45 seconds later Erin Brand would score again on the power play to make it 4-1. Then at the 9:33 mark of the third period Cardinals, Melissa Sheeran would get her second goal of the night to make it 5-1. Then at 16:32 of the third period, Kayla Meghan would score to end the game at 6-1. The game would remain scoreless through the first period and the Pioneers would take the 1-0 lead a minute into the second period. The Cardinals would fight back and tie the game at one Kayla Meneghin goal. Then the Cardinals would take the 2-1 lead at the four-minute mark of third on Kayla Meneghin shorthanded goal. Then in the final minute of the game, Megan Crandell would add the empty netter to secure the 3-1 victory. The Cardinals would open the scoring at 3:20 of the first period on the Sarah Wolfe goal to make it 1-0. Then at the 7:57 mark of the 1st period, the Cardinals would extend the lead to 2-0 on the Megan Crandell goal. Then under a minute later the Cardinals would make it 3-0 on the Melissa Ames goal. The Cardinals would add one more in the 1st period on the Meghan Kraus goal to make it 4-0. The Pioneers would get on the board near the need of the first to make it 4-1 Cardinals after the 1st period. That is where the game would stay until the 9-minute mark of the third when the Pioneers would score to make it 4-2. Then just over two minutes later the Cardinals would regain their three-goal lead at 5-2 on Ashley Songin goal. Then at the 13:17 mark of the third, the Cardinals would end there scoring on the Mackenize Millen goal to secure the 6-2 victory. Plattsburgh State's team poses for there team photo as they are crowned the 2016 ECAC West Champions. The #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #3 Utica Pioneers in the 2016 ECAC West Championship. The Cardinals would show their muscle early in the contest scoring four goals in the first period from Karen Hudson, Kayla Meneghain, Jordan Lipson and Courtney Moriarty for the 4-0 lead. In the second period, the Cardinals would add two more goals from Melissa Sheeran, and Melissa Ames for 6-0 lead. In the third period, the Cardinals would put the icing on the cake with two more goals Courtney Moriarty (second of the night), and Jordan Lipson (second of the night) to secure the 8-0 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals would be crowned the 2016 ECAC West Champions and Camille Leonard would stop all 17 shots in the shutout victory as they head to the NCAA Tournament. Gallery
