Plattsburgh State's Tim Keenan (53) with the shot and the score that he bounced into the net for one of three goals on the afternoon. It would be the season opener for the home Plattsburgh State Cardinals as they would long-time school rival in all sports the Norwich Cadets on a brisk day at the Cardinal Complex on campus. The game would start tight through the first quarter as the Cadets would have the 4-2 lead after the first quarter scoring for the Cardinals would be Donald Woods and Tim Keenan. In the second quarter the Cadets would start to take control of the game with the 6-2 quarter and have a 10-4 lead at the break and scoring for the Cardinals again would be Donald Woods and Tim Keenan. When the teams would return for the third quarter it would be a very even game as it would be a 3-3 quarter making a 13-7 quarter scoring for the Cardinals would be Donald Woods (third of the game), Josh Eiseman, and Tim Keenan (third of the game). In the fourth quarter the Cadets would take control of the game and put the icing on the cake with a 5-2 quarter scoring for the Cardinals would be Anthony Faber and John Eiseman (second of the night) as the Cadets would get the 18-9 win. With the win, the Norwich Cadets start their season 1-0 while the Plattsburgh State Cardinals will go to 0-1 as they head to their next game against Mount St. Mary's. Gallery

Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Basketball: #1 Moriah Vikings @ Plattsburgh Hornets February 20th, 2024

Moriah's Chase McGiness (22) stretches out for the lay-in as he crashes down the lane for the score. It would be the last game of the regular season for both the Plattsburgh Hornets and the #1 Moriah Vikings as they would host them at the Hornets Nest in front of a full nest. The Hornets would not be a very good host to the Moriah Vikings as they would jump out and take control of the game with a 28-7 first quarter. In the second quarter, the Vikings would look to get back in the game with a 17-11 quarter although the Hornets would take the 39-24 lead into the intermission. When the teams would return for the second half the third quarter would be very evenly contested as the Hornets would have the slim 21-18 quarter and expand their lead to 60-42 into the fourth quarter. In that fourth quarter, the Vikings would do their best to get back in the game with a 12-7 quarter but it wouldn't be enough as the Hornets would get the 67-54 victory. In the winning effort, the Hornets would go to 12-5 while the Vikings would fall to 17-2 on the season. Gallery

Plattsburgh Sate's Trey Thomas (14) charges down the zone and rips it past the goal in traffic to give the Cardinals the 4-2 lead. It would be the start of the last weekend of regular season games from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena and the #5 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be looking to avenge one of their four losses on the season as they would host the Buffalo State Bengals and make the push for the number 2 seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Conference Tournament. The Bengals would be looking to get the sweep of the Cardinals on the season and get off to a quick start as they would score just 2:53 into the game on the Anthony Morin goal. The game would stay there till there were five minutes left in the second period when the Cardinals would get the equalizer on the Kevin Weaver Vitale powerplay goal to make it a 1-1 game. The Bengals would regain the one-goal lead at 2-1 on the Joe Glamos powerplay goal. The lead would be short-lived though as the Cardinals would tie the game up 75 seconds later on the Jake Layni goal The Cardinals would get their first lead of the game at the 12:31 mark of the third period when Ryan Butler would score to give the Cardinals would get the lead at 3-2. Then with 3:30 left in the game, the Cardinals would extend their lead to 4-2 on the Trey Thomas goal. Then the closing minute of the game the Cardinals would put the icing on the cake with Ryan Butler's empty net goal. In the winning effort, Jacob Hearne would make 20 saves on the night as the Cardinals would go to 18-4-2 on the season as they head into the season finale against Fredonia State Blue Devils Saturday afternoon. Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Hockey: Northeastern Clinton Cougars @ #8 Beekmantown Eagles February 12th 2024

Northeastern Clinton's Garrett Pilon (10) with the crunching hit on the Beekmantown skater as they go after the loose puck along the boards. It would be the last regular season game for the #8 Beekmantown Eagles as they would host the Northeastern Clinton Cougars at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena on senior night. It would just take 2:27 into the game before we had our first goal from Novak Jarus for the Eagles to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Cougars would come right back and tie the game up at one on the Eddie Bulriss goal just two minutes later. About halfway through the period, the Eagles would retake the lead on the shorthanded goal by Zach Lapier to make it a 2-1 game. The Cougars would answer the bell right back just 20 seconds later on the Wayne Simpson goal to tie the game at two. The Eagles come out swinging in the second period and take the 3-2 lead just seven into the period on the Louis Sweenor goal. The Eagles would stay on fire as they would score again just 1:20 later as Novak Jarus would get his second goal of the game to make it a 4-2 game. The Cougars would come back again and make it a one-goal again on the Wayne Simpson second of the evening to make it a 4-3 game. The game would stay there till the 6:27 mark of the third period when Owen Ebersol would tie the game for the Cougars at four. The Eagles from there would take control of the game as they would get three unanswered goals from Louis Sweenor (two) and Zach Lapier as the Eagles secured the 7-4 win. In the winning effort, the Eagles would finish off the sectional season with a perfect 8-0 record and the regular season at 17-3 while the Northeastern Clinton Cougars fall to 4-14-1 on the season. Ella Lobdell (15) with the three from the elbow as part of a 17-point night as she would make the 1,000-point mark. It would be a matchup inside the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference of Section VII Girl's Basketball in Plattsburgh as the Seton Catholic Knights would host the Boquet Valley Griffins in a rematch of the Section VII Class D Finals from a year ago that took place about 5 miles down the road. The game would be low-scoring through the opening eight minutes as the home Knights would have the 9-8 lead. In the second quarter, the scoring would stay low as the defense would still stand tall as the Griffins would win the quarter 9-6 and take the 17-15 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter it would be another great defensive quarter as the Knights would get the 6-5 quarter but the Griffins would still have the 22-21 lead as they went to the fourth. In the fourth quarter, there would be a milestone that would be reached as Ella Lobdell would be the newest member of the 1,000-point club and from there it would seem like both teams had a major weight lifted off them as the Griffins would end up winning the quarter 16-11 which would be half the team's points in that quarter alone. The Griffins would get the 38-32 win and go to 12-7 on the season as they head into the playoffs as the Knights fall to 9-11 on the season. Gallery

Saranac's Evan Patrie (6) puts it glove side on the Saranac Lake-Lake Placid's Cassidy Goodman (31) to make it 4-0 at the time. It would be the second meeting of the year between the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers and the SaranacSpartans this time from the Amer-Can North Sports Center in Section VII Boy's Hockey. The Spartans would get the game started fast as Adrian Barnes would get the opening goal of the game just 1:51 into the game and the Spartans would be off and running as they would add three more goals in the period from Ashtyn Catlin, Evan Patrie, and Landen Duprey and take the 4-0 lead after the first period. In the second period the good times would start rolling for the Spartans would add a five spot in the period on goals from Landen Duprey three in the period and four in the game and Noah Miner and Jonathan Coryer would get the other two. While Ayden McCormick would get the Lakers on the board in the period the Spartans would be in control with the 9-1 lead after the second period. In the third period, the Spartans would empty the bench and get the other players in the game. The Spartans would still get 4 goals in period two coming from Tom Sorensen (his first two of his high school career) with the other two coming from Ryan Campbell and Landen Duprey his fifth of the game as the Spartans would get the 13-1. In the winning effort, Shawn McLane would make 15 saves on the night as the Spartans would go to 11-7-1 on the season. The Lakers goalies would combine for nearly 50 saves on the night as they fell to 5-12-1. The Lakers will be back in action Wednesday with their home finale against the Plattsburgh Hornets. While Saranac Spartans will finish their regular season with a nonleague against the Watertown Crusaders. Gallery

Crown Point's Matt Beeman (31) would get up and get tall as he would block the shot from Plattsburgh's Dan Hartman (11) in front of the basket. It would be an interconference matchup inside section seven boys' basketball this Saturday afternoon as the Plattsburgh Hornets would be one of the top teams in the section this year the Crown Point Panthers. The bigger Plattsburgh Hornets would leave little to the imagination on this day as they would have their way with the Panthers in the first half and have a 47-19 lead at the break. When the teams returned for the third quarter it would be more of the same as the Hornets would have a 27-15 quarter and take a 74-34 lead into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the Hornets would empty the bench and get everyone in the game and the Panthers would win the quarter 16-10 but on the scoreboard, it would be all Hornets on this afternoon with an 84-51 victory. In the winning effort, the Hornets would improve to 10-8 on the season and the Panthers would fall to 12-5 as both teams are coming down the playoff stretch and are looking forward to the sectionals. Christain Brothers Academy's Ethan Premo (21) backs his way into Plattsburgh's Lucas Dashnaw (27) and pins him along the boards. It would be a matchup between neighboring sections as the Christain Brothers Academy Brothers from section II would come to Plattsburgh and the Ameri-can North Sports Center and take on the Plattsburgh Hornets. The opening goal of the game would come with about four minutes left in the first period when Patrick Feranec would light the lamp for the 1-0 Brothers lead. The lead would be short-lived though as the Hornets would come back about two minutes later and get the equalizer to tie the game at one on the Braeden Calkins goal. The game would stay there through most of the second period until Brothers Dom Waters would make it a 2-1 game with five minutes left in the period. The Hornets would come back again and tie the game at two on the powerplay goal from Cooper Holland 1:18 later in the period. In the third period though the Brothers would be too much for the Hornets on this day as they would get three goals from Dom Waters, Mason Famulare, and Ethan Premo while the Hornets would get one from Braeden Calkins as the Brothers would get the 5-3 win. In the winning effort, Christan Brothers Academy would go to 6-13-1 on the season and the Plattsburgh Hornets would fall to 1-16-1 on the season as they head to their Wednesday contest with the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers. SUNYAC Women's Hockey: Potsdam State Bears @ #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals February 10th, 2024

It would be senior day at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena before the game with their fellow north country foe the Potsdam State Bears they would honor the outgoing senior class a class that would go to 4 straight NCAA Tournaments and have a couple frozen fours in front of 400 Cardinal fans. As for the game on the ice, the Cardinals would have the lone goal of the game with 39 seconds left in the first period from Mattie Norton. The Cardinals would have plenty of chances throughout the afternoon they just weren't able to light the lamp the rest of the night as Potsdam State's Maggie Parent would make 49 saves as the Cardinals would get the 1-0 victory. In the winning effort, Lilla Nease would make 17 saves as she would have another shutout on the season and go to 20-2-1 on the season. As they head into their last pair of regular season games before the playoffs start next weekend at Cortland State. Gallery

Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Girl's Basketball: Bolton Eagles @ Seton Catholic Knights February 8th 2024

Seton Catholic's Grace Trombley (12) takes flight for the layup off the backboard as part of a game-high 12 points. It would be a matchup inside the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference in Plattsburgh as the Bolton Jaguars would travel up to take on the Seton Catholic Knights in Girl's Basketball action. It would be a slow start out of the gate as the Seton Catholic Knights would hold just the 8-1 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the offense would start to heat out for the Knights as they would have a 10-4 quarter and take the 18-5 lead into the intermission. When the teams would return for the third quarter the defenses would still stay on top as the Knights would have a 8-4 quarter and take the 26-9 lead into the fourth quarter. In that fourth quarter with it looking like the Knights would have the game in hand the Jaguars would do their best to get back in the game with an 11-8 quarter but the nights would hold on for the 34-20 victory. In the winning effort, the Seton Catholic Knights get back to 500 on the season as they are now 9-9 while the Bolton Eagles suffer just their third loss on the season and are 14-3. The Knights will be back in action Saturday as they host the Northern Adirondack Bobcats Gallery
